I have been dancing since I was three years old and at five started training in ballet, which I danced for fifteen years. I later explored dance traditions from Nigeria, Butoh and the Seki Method, Gaga and 5Rhythms. I have been taught, mentored and influenced by many other dancers, and hugely supported. In my mid-twenties I started my psychotherapy training and was drawn to working with body-based experiential approaches, including bioenergetic analysis, Hakomi and Process Oriented Psychology. I saw the impact of working somatically and energetically in my clients and experienced this in myself. Over ten years I wove together my knowledge and discoveries into movement and dance, and was especially supported by butoh dance.
Innate Dance is how I’ve named my approach, which aims to work at the meeting points of the kinetic, somatic, imaginative and emotional bodies. It recognises that dances come from our unique inner landscape and imagination, which can be trusted as sources of inspiration that move us. It’s about breaking up stuck energy, giving way to fresh new movements. The approach gives space for emotions to shift and flow, for us to enjoy our own creativity, and to receive ourselves. Innate Dance creates space for what wants to be seen to emerge, so that we can come to know the ever-deepening layers of our uniqueness.
